Halal meal prep in the UK: what to look for

Why "halal" needs to mean more than a label on the box, and how Knockout Kitchen approaches it.

Halal meal prep has grown a lot in the UK, which is a good thing, but it also means it's worth knowing what to actually look for, rather than taking "halal" on trust from packaging alone.

What halal means for food

Halal refers to food that is permissible under Islamic dietary law. For meat, that includes how the animal is reared and slaughtered, and extends to making sure no non-halal ingredients (including certain additives, alcohol-derived ingredients, or cross-contamination with non-halal products) end up in the final meal.

Why it's easy to get wrong

How Knockout Kitchen approaches halal

Halal hasn't been bolted onto Knockout Kitchen as a marketing angle, it's been part of the brand since co-founders Hamza Yousuf and Muhammad Ali started preparing meals in Rochdale, Greater Manchester to support Ali's boxing training. Every meal on the menu is 100% halal, full stop, not "halal options available." You can read more about where that started on our Our Story page.

Halal doesn't mean bland

One of the reasons Knockout Kitchen exists at all is that the founders found halal "fitness food" was almost always bland: plain chicken, plain rice, on repeat. The whole menu is built around the spiced, marinated, flavour-forward cooking the founders grew up with, while keeping the calories and macros clearly shown on every meal. See the full menu with nutrition to see exactly what's in each one.
